The Senators begin the adjustment period with their new roommate and his girlfriend. Louis goes on the Colbert Report and is publicly embarrassed. Robert is upset to learn the ethics committee is gunning for him.
The four Senators and staff make it to Afghanistan, decide to use a private security company and receive a surprise welcome.
Through sheer chance, Louis becomes a hero and surges ahead in the polls. Adriana arranges a private jet to fly everybody home. After arriving, Gil John hears it from his wife for not getting any headlines while abroad and plans on flying in personally to prepare him for his debate.
Maddie pushes Gil John hard in preparation for debating his opponent in his reelection campaign. The ethics committee investigating Robert begins deliberations with Gil John insisting his membership is not a conflict of interest. Louis still has the media focus as he recovers from his wounds. Debate day arrives for Gil John, but the debate turns out to be a town hall. His opponent Digger Mancusi is slick and well prepared, while Gil John not so much, even with Robert's help. Meanwhile, Graydon Talbot is slowly working his way into Andy's inner circle while Senator DuPeche assists with the preparations to bring her friend Louis home from the hospital.
Rosalyn organizes a prayer brunch to celebrate Louis' homecoming from the hospital, but the Senators and their fellow Democrats find it difficult to set aside their differences. Aaron and Tammy's relationship continues to grow and Lola has a surprise in store for James.

Robert pays a visit to his home state to promote fracking, a visit which ends in disaster. Louis interviews potential housekeepers while Andy's star is rising with help from his friends.
Robert proves to the ethics committee that he would never take a mohair suit while Andy prepares to deliver a rebuttal after the State of the Union. Louis is put in the spotlight on his first day back when James mistakenly tweets a photo intended for Lola from the wrong account.
Louis runs into trouble when the Las Vegas showgirls want to organize into a union. Gil John's loss of control in Afghanistan comes back to haunt him. Andy has his picture taken for the cover of Vanity Fair but Adriana's confidante sees his Andy for who he really is.
When a Senator dies in office, members of both sides of the Senate take the opportunity to eulogize a man they mostly hated, in order to get the press coverage. Louis' efforts in stopping the showgirls strike leads to a victorious re-election campaign while Robert must participate in a debate to save his seat.
