Neil Hackett and his wife Fiona finally achieve their long cherished dream of buying a lodge in the Lake District. Their 'traditional' lodge at Lake View Holiday Park means everything to them, the years of scrimping and saving all now feel worth it. That is until they wake up the next morning to discover their neighbours, the Dillons, Robert and Penny. The Dillons are effortlessly superior in every way. Fiona enjoys the chance to make friends with her neighbours at a 'getting to know you' barbecue, but Neil is less convinced. When night falls and the sangria flows the atmosphere goes from promising to catastrophic when Neil commits the ultimate faux pas.
When Neil believes he's been fired he goes off the deep end, meaning plans for a new WIFI mast on the site are put in serious jeopardy.
Neil takes the family on a perilous mountain walk and Robert steps into avoid an inevitable disaster. Unfortunately, Neil and Penny manage to make matters worse, while Neil's mother makes an immediate impact on site.
Neil is feeling despondent about his lack of popularity and throws a party to try to make amends. The plan backfires when Robert proves to be the life and soul of the party.
Neil's plans to celebrate his wedding anniversary go awry when Fiona temporarily falls ill. The delay caused sees the pair arrive at a top restaurant a few minutes late - and they are mortified to find their table has already been reallocated to none other than Penny and Robert. Meanwhile, Mercy is at pains to keep her relationship with Fieldhouse under wraps to avoid upsetting Neil, and Garth overhears Petra splitting up with boyfriend Sebastian.
Little Neil announces he has to make a scale model of a building of world significance as part of his homework. Neil tries to assist, but is easily distracted and while he is away at the pencil museum, Robert helps the youngster construct the Chrysler building. Distraught by this turn of events, Neil then tries to play catch-up, proposing they build a facsimile of the Empire State building. Meanwhile, Garth breaks into one of the lodges in an effort to ingratiate himself with Petra.
Robert and Penny decide to put their lodge up for sale, due to Petra's refusal to come to The Lakes with them. Neil is delighted about the imminent departure until he meets the Dillon's possible replacements - a family very similar to his own. Fiona takes umbrage when Neil lets slip about an old crush, Neil's mother comes clean about her on-site relationship and a balloon flight seems set to bring everyone together.
