The emergency team are working a typical night shift when they are called out to a help at major road traffic collision where a young woman is trapped in her car and has stopped breathing.
After racing to beat the local fire brigade to a couple of emergencies, Stuart ends up admitting that he has been 'firing blanks' due to the stress of his job. He then meets and arranges a date with Angie, a student and local eco-campaigner.
The team end up being called out to help to a young man who is living in a student house but is suffering with drug induced paranoia.
After Woodvine threatens to split up the team, Stuart promises there will be an improvement which ends up seeing Rachid challenging his leadership. Maxine attempts to make sure that her internet date finds her attractive.
Stuart denies that he is under any stress at work. Maxine feels unsettled about the way she feels about Craig which are threatening her promotion chances. Stuart attempts to play Cupid, in a bid to convince Maxie that the fireman really is the right man for her.
Stuart is hit hard by a life-or-passing situation and he needs help from somebody to see him through it. With Maxine pre-occupied with fireman Craig, there is nobody he can turn to. Rachid's future on the team is put in doubt. Ashley is surprised to discover that he has suddenly gained a live-in boyfriend.
