Spencer finds himself on the defense after an interview he gave comes out, upsetting his old teammates and emotions get the best of them. Coop and Layla return from tour, but while Coop tries to figure out what happened with Patience, she tries to learn why Tyrone's sister is back. Billy is excited for a fresh start at South Crenshaw High, but he must confront something from his past first that could be a roadblock to his success. Meanwhile, Jordan and Simone struggle with saying goodbye to someone they love.
Both Spencer and Billy are not getting the hero's welcome they expected from the football team and quickly realize they need to adjust their style and start earning the team's trust first. Jordan is surprised at who the new football coach at Beverly turns out to be and that his starting quarterback position is threatened when the coach starts shaking things up. Coop and Layla get into an argument over Coop's tour paycheck, which leads Layla to discover why Patience left the tour early. Meanwhile, Asher is keeping a secret from Olivia that could jeopardize their relationship.
With the first game of the season coming up, Spencer starts to feel the pressure on and off the field. Spencer decides to confide in Layla who might have a helpful suggestion. Now that Spencer and Billy are gone, Jordan realizes he needs to step up. Asher keeps trying to talk to Olivia about the summer, but she does everything she can to avoid the issue. Meanwhile, Coop is unconvinced that Tyrone's sister, Mo has good intentions, and maybe she is just paranoid, especially when she learns of some key information pertaining to Spencer.
Following Layla's advice to see a therapist, Spencer tries to get to the root of his problem, which leads to a shocking revelation. Jordan grows concerned about Simone's behavior, but when he learns the reason why, he tries to be supportive in the way she needs. Even though Asher is still suspended, he tries to prove himself to Montes and earn a potential place somehow on the team. Meanwhile, Coop wants to make a music video and turns to the community to help, while Layla and her dad face off about Patience.
After Spencer gets some sage advice, he and the team rally around Chris to help him with his trauma, leaving Spencer to realize it's time to be honest with Coop to get over his. Laura grows concerned about Olivia's sobriety when she notices a change in her behavior, resulting in Laura doing something that could jeopardize their relationship. Jordan gets sidelined during a game, but his eagerness to get back on the field might have a long-term consequence. Meanwhile, Layla hits a dead end with her lawsuit, so Patience takes matters into her own hands knowing Coop won't be happy when she finds out.
With everything that has been going on, Spencer needs some alone time to clear his head and decides to go to the family cabin, but he gets a surprise visit from his friends. Grateful for the support, everyone seems to be having fun, until secrets come out leaving some of the couples out of sorts with each other. Coop is still reeling from everything Spencer said and with the urging of Patience, heads out to the cabin to confront Spencer. Meanwhile, Billy shows up to the house to do a few repairs, but when things go awry, Billy and Laura, work together to fix the problem.
With Coop performing in Las Vegas, Spencer and some of the gang take a road trip to see her and Layla on tour. Layla is nervous to see Spencer and admit how she is feeling towards him, and surprisingly Spencer also gets a little clarity on his feelings. Olivia surprises the group last minute, but she notices that Jordan and Simone are acting suspicious, so she enlists Spencer's help to see what they are up to. Meanwhile, with the urging of Coop, Patience tries stand up for herself, but JP has other plans leaving Patience stunned when she discovers the reason why.
With Homecoming King and Queen nominations being announced, neither Spencer nor Coop seem to be in a celebratory mood with everything going on. Laura notices that Olivia has become more withdrawn and allows Olivia and Jordan to both take a mental health day and get some much-needed twin bonding time. Things get heated with Layla and Olivia, leaving Olivia to get some much-needed clarity. Meanwhile, Billy is frustrated with the interim principal's new rules, leaving Spencer to come up with a game plan with a little help from Grace.
Spencer is upset with Olivia, which leaves him to face some difficult truths of his own. Olivia makes things even worse, leaving Billy, Laura and Jordan worried. Billy is in search of a kicker and holds school tryouts and is surprised at who the number one candidate turns out to be. Meanwhile, Montes gives Asher a tough choice about his football career and Coop makes a decision about school after talking with her mom.
Spencer is feeling the pressure and knows he needs to have the game of his life as he is still trying to follow his dream of playing football. Jordan makes a risky choice when it comes to football. Olivia attends a new Narcotics Anonymous in search of a sponsor but is worried about making the wrong choice. Coop reveals some information to Layla about Layla's dad. Meanwhile, Billy and Laura are shocked when they hear what Jordan has been keeping from them.
When a college scout comes to talk to Spencer, he must decide if the strings attached is worth it. Billy realizes that the recruiting game has changed and has an idea on how to help his players. A police shooting of a young black woman hits to close too home for Olivia, leaving her to take drastic measures to get justice. Jordan is struggling with everything going on, so Spencer, Asher and JJ try to help him out. Layla is inspired by Coop when Coop does something selfless and for a good cause. Meanwhile, Grace learns something about Principal Carter that shows him in a different light.
When the truth comes out, Laura is furious and is left to face the consequences. Seeing everything going on, Spencer doesn't want to sit on the sidelines and asks something of his teammates that could jeopardize the rest of their season. Billy deals with something personal by himself, but after a conversation with his dad he realizes what has really happened. Meanwhile, Simone is worried about Jordan and turns to his friends for help.
When Spencer learns that Grace skipped her own college graduation, he enlists Olivia's help to throw her a surprise party. Billy is worried about his players' chances at college recruitment, so he tries to organize a scrimmage game to help.
When Spencer's quarterback must miss the game against Westlake, Spencer puts extra pressure on himself and his young teammates because of what is at stake. Laura must deal with a new wrinkle at work that involves Olivia leaving Laura with a tough decision.
When Billy forces Spencer and Frausto to get on the same page, the night takes an interesting turn when they run into Jordan and Asher. Olivia is excited to hang out with Layla for some much-needed bonding, but the night doesn't go as Olivia had planned. Laura needs some work advice and turns to Grace for some insight, but they both get more than they bargained for. Meanwhile, Billy finds himself in an unusual situation as he takes a walk down memory lane.
As Spencer's high school football career is coming to an end, he starts to imagine what his future might look like. Jordan grows concerned about his football future and Asher gets upset when he discovers that Montes has been keeping something from him. Grace tries to have a nice evening after learning some good new, but Dillon finds a way to mess it up. Meanwhile, the group holds a Friendsgiving at Layla's but not everyone seems to receive a friendly welcome.
Ready to get out of town for a few days, Spencer, Olivia, Jordan and Simone decide to visit Simone's aunt Amara at her HBCU in Atlanta where she is a journalism professor. The group is relishing in campus life, but it also is giving Simone and Olivia a different perspective they weren't expecting. While enjoying herself, Simone has a run in with a star baseball athletes named Damon, who she learns has his own reasons for being on campus.
With Jordan and Simone's big day quickly approaching they start to envision what their new future will look like with the help of Billy and Laura. Spencer and Billy both realize how much pressure the football team is feeling but to their surprise they may have a new ally. Jordan helps Olivia see what has been holding her back making her look at how to balance recovery and romance. Meanwhile, Layla and Coop both find out secrets to explain what has been really going on.
