The gang are reunited when Adam returns to Manchester after years of working abroad. Whilst Adam travelled the world on business, his 15 year-old-son, Matthew chose boarding school and, under the guardianship of Godmother, Karen, has turned into a well adjusted young man, or so it seems. It breaks Karen's heart to see what Rachel is missing out on, and unlike Adam, she's not fooled by Matt's bravado. What this kid needs more than anything right now is his Dad. Pete and Jenny are down on their uppers. With two teenagers to support, Pete's juggling two jobs; cabbie and home-help, and Jenny's work in Events Management at a grand hotel is hardly bringing home the bacon. Fast approaching 50, mortgaged up to the eyeballs, Pete is understandably miserable but is pleased to see his best again.
As Pete chauffeurs the 'happy' couple away from the wedding venue Adam reveals that he's changed his mind about starting a future together in Singapore. His son Matthew needs him in Manchester. The Giffords money worries have taken a toll on their marriage and in particular, their sex life. In an attempt to lift Pete's spirits, Jen reminds him of the bedroom fantasies they used to act out when they were younger, but it's going to take more than a French maid's costume to snap Pete out of this one. Jenny knows that she's turned the head of a client at work and can't fail to be flattered. Trevor is persistent but Jenny would never cheat on her beloved Pete, would she? Under pressure from his boss, David continues to try and impress Adam's father-in-law, millionaire businessman, Eddie Zubayr, even enlisting the help of ex-wife Karen, whom Eddie clearly has designs on. When David invites Eddie along to the corporate box at Old Trafford his CEO gets wind of the fact and invites himself along forcing David to let his old friends down. As the dads and lads watch on the match on the pub's big screen, Adam notices that even the win isn't putting a smile on Pete's face. Could there be more to his mood than sim.
When David is woken in the early hours by the police, he assumes that something terrible has happened to one of the kids. Relieved to hear that this is not the case, the rug is pulled from under his feet when he finds himself under arrest.
David realises he may have his work cut out proving his innocence when even his wife Robyn turns against him, while Pete receives another blow when he arrives at work to see Harry. Jen is taken to task by her sister Sheila over the care of their elderly mother and Karen steps her relationship with Eddie up a notch, but a visit from a desperate David threatens her plans, and Adam faces problems when his wife becomes increasingly distant.
Trying to prove his innocence, David realises that he may have his work cut out when his own wife, divorce Lawyer Robyn turns against him. Pete receives another blow when he arrives at work to see Harry. Already juggling a job, two kids and a depressed husband Jen's facade finally slips when she is pulled to task by her sister, Shelia, over the care of their elderly mother. Is this the straw that breaks Jenny's back? Just as Karen takes her relationship with Eddie up a notch, a visit from a desperate David threatens to put the kibosh on it. Adam has relationship worries of a different kind when his wife becomes increasingly distant, almost incommunicado in fact. Pete notes that breakfast in bed is always a winner with Jen but that might not be so easy when the recipient is over six thousand miles away. So there he has it, a romantic breakfast over Skype. What could possibly go wrong?
Karen's plan to go it alone pays off in more ways than one when a handsome young entrepreneur makes her an offer she cannot refuse. Pete's world falls apart when daughter Chloe rejects him. Already on the edge, could this tip him over?.
Adam is beginning to have feelings for Tina and suspects that she may feel the same. Pete and Jenny finally agree on a compromise with Harry's daughter. Still concerned about Pete's mental well-being, Jenny persuades him to attend a mindfulness class. When Karen discovers that David's finances have hit rock bottom, she notes that he could dip into the girls' trust fund, unaware that he has already done so. Can David sink any lower?.
Tina organises an eventful surprise party for Adam, which is attended by a few of his friends and lots of hers. When Pete and Adam nip out on a booze run, they find themselves staring passing in the face. Pete is not sure that even Adam can talk his way out of this one.
