Joe pays a visit to Mel's neighbor, Arnie (John Ratzenberger), and asks him to do something about his noisy parrot, but ends up finding Mel's house has been built on part of the neighbor's property. Joe and Mel must remain civil with the neighbor to gain the land back, however Mel finds being nice to her neighbor to be a little difficult. Meanwhile, Lennox stars in a PSA Ryder films for a school project.
In Part 1 of the two-part Season 1 finale, Mel and Joe are concerned about Lennox attending an all-night party with her boyfriend following a school dance, so Mel persuades Joe to go after her. Elsewhere, Ryder stops backing down to Holly.
In the conclusion of the two-part Season 1 finale, Joe's financial situation changes, forcing him and Mel to make some hard choices. Meanwhile, a leaky ceiling grows into a huge problem for Mel.
