On his 40th birthday, Ben Donovan spends a typical day at work. Today he's trying to get the arena ready for the circus that night only the hockey rink ice won't melt. He also deals with a lost elephant and putting together a last minute press conference. On top of it all, Alice leaves Ben for another man just as Ben realizes he doesn't want to be alone.
While Ben caters to the needs of a teen heartthrob who is performing at the arena, Crystal holds an employee of the month contest, although she's already picked a winner.
Ben gets set up on a blind date with Heather's sister, Stephanie, and soon finds out that she's crazy. Later, Ben ends up on a double date with Stephanie, Roman, and Heather. Meanwhile, Crystal tries to get her dog into a dog show, and Alice tries to impress her best friend.
Ben tries to get his employees to like him, with mixed results. Meanwhile, Heather takes on the responsibility of finding a new halftime act when the mascot quits, and Crystal invites Alonzo and Alice out on a double date with her new boyfriend.
After finding out that Roman doesn't have a place to sleep, Ben takes him into his own home. Meanwhile, Alice has a hard time keeping up with Alonzo.
Crystal tries to find closure with her ex-husband, while Alice helps Alonzo deal with two billionaires.
It's a dream come true for Ben when he teams with Alonzo to play doubles against tennis legend Jimmy Connors and actor Fred Savage in a celebrity tennis tournament.
Alice wants an assistant, so Ben gives her Roman. Crystal wants to use The Sunshine Center for a friend's funeral and Alonzo tells all about a relationship in his past.
Ben's going to be surprised when he finds out that his one night stand is Crystal's new assistant. But Ben learns something about himself when he and Vivian try to carry on with their no-strings-attached relationship. Dave, the mascot, is driving Alonzo crazy.
