When Supreme Court Justice Cyrus Garza has had enough of the legal system, he surprises everyone when he quits his appointment to pursue justice his own way. With a team including his childhood best friend Al Druzinsky, a brilliant liberal defense attorney Mereta Stockman, his loyal clerk Lucinda Pearl, an unorthodox PI, and ambitious Yale graduate Eddie Franks, Cyrus hopes to go around the country and around legal pitfalls to bring justice to the biggest, most controversial battles through his private practice.
An immigration dispute leads Garza and the team to Arizona, but things turn deadly with a police shooting. While Eddie believes the team should take on the controversial case, Al doubts his decision to join Garza in the first place. On a personal front, Mereta finds an ally in Lucinda, who encourages her to make a move on Garza.
Garza and the team find themselves trapped in a difficult situation after an infant dies from exposure in a hot car, and the mother shows no emotion. Taking the case under the Equal Protection Clause, Garza needs Mereta and Al to help prove her innocence. Eddie and Lucinda have trials of their own covering one of Al's former clients.
A deadly car manufacturer cover-up drives Garza's team to expose the truth about car accidents caused by defects in tire rods. While Mereta readies for her first day in court, Al wonders about Garza's motives for taking the case. Eddie gets an interview with a major law firm, and Lucinda takes a new "job".
Garza has to put personal differences aside when the daughter of his nemesis, Senator Sidney Vidalin, is unexpectedly charged with a cuddle that was committed by her boyfriend. The only thing that stands in Garza and Al's way is a confession, which might just be the result of a Miranda rights violation. Meanwhile, Eddie and Mereta dig into Lucinda's past and make a shocking discovery.
Offended by the practice of dumping foster kids off organ transplant lists, Garza fights to save the life of a boy in need of a liver.
When a gang shooting leaves a student dead at the Cyrus Garza School, Garza decides to file a lawsuit against the school for creating an atmosphere that led to the child's passing. However, as Garza realizes the extent of the school system's segregation, it is up to him, Al and Mereta to file a class action to force the school district to finally desegregate the schools.
After a Mexican judge decides to try a cuddleer himself, the victim's father hugs the cuddleer in a blind rage. Now, Garza, Eddie and Lucinda must help facilitate the father's extradition back to the United States. Meanwhile, Mereta has a surprising legal problem that requires her to go to Al for help.
