The first ever challenge seems simple enough.. to design a glamorous outfit for a night out, made only from materials popular Manhattan store? a supermarket. With only a 50$ budget the designers only have an hour to figure out what they can possibly buy at the grocery store that can help them win on the runway. Not only is Mario the out of the market, he's also the first out of the workroom. After half an hour, he is satisfied with his simple shower curtain gown, though the competition is not terribly impressed. Austin, busy shucking corn is also frantic trying to figure out what he is going to do with it when he is done. Mario meanwhile takes about half the time as the rest of the crew does to finish his outfit. While Kara's outfit seems to be going ok, her model hasn't showing up causing Kara to use up her valuable time trying to recruit someone walking by on the streets of New York. At the beginning of the episode model Mary is out! As a treat of simplicity the challenge seems simple enough - make an outfit out of cotton and no food has to be used! However the task dose have a small twist to it. The design must elude the designers impression of Envy. It turns out that envy doesn't conjure up the same ideas in everyone. Vanessa evokes baby-envy, while Nora goes abstract, placing strategic cutouts revealing areas of body envy. Thinking of her father's career in the Air Force, Kara creates a personal military-inspired gown connecting the dots from envy and war. For Starr, envy is like an unhealthy growth, and Jay goes for social commentary, emblazoned with envious phrases. Surprised that they are not headed for the runway instead ending at a down town store. Fashion is more then sewing clothes and loving what you do, it can't be a careen until someone is buying it. Which makes this business aspect of the competition just what they need. The designers will have to "sell their vision" to the most fashionable people in New York. During a silent auction, the designer whose garment earns the highest bid will win the challenge; the rest will be judged on the runway, and one will be eliminated. At the beginning of the episode model ALLISON is out!The designers meet with Heidi at Banana Republic studios where they find out what the new challenge is: design a holiday dress that fits in with Banana Republic's current collection in one of the two themes. 1)"my grandmother's attic" in soft pinks and yellows, and 2)"Art Deco", in black, white and silver. Tim arrives to "up the ante" when he announces that the winning design will be sold online and in select stores nationwide, as part of Banana Republic's winter line. Jay takes inspiration from a photo of the Chrysler building, while Austin goes with the flowery soft dress. The morning before the runway, Kara tries to help Wendy reverse her fortunes with a home makeover. You're either in, or you're out, who was out this week? Starr is Out.
At the beginning of the episode model JOSIANE is out! For the next challenge, our designers meet Sarah Hudson, a rising rock star looking for a new look. The designers will be judged on the entire look, hair and makeup. In pure Project Runway style there is a twist. Only three designers will get to see their designs on the runway. Sarah will chose three concepts she likes best out of the nine presented to her, the designers whose concept she designs will them choose a team from the other designers to help them pull of their idea. The teams end up being 1) Kevin, Nora and Alexandra 2) Jay Kara and Rob and finally 3) Austin Wendy and Vanessa with the leaders being Jay, Austin and Kevin. At the beginning of the episode model AUDREY is out! When the designers selected their models this week, they didn't realize that they were also choosing their next client. The challenge: to design a wedding dress for the model they have selected. Having seen Morgan drive other designers to distraction, Jay wonders if he hasn't made a fatal choice when he realized how pivotal Morgan, his choice in model this week will be in his performance in this challenge. With only two days to work, and 0, the designers are off to work. A few of the models decide to check in, some with boyfriends, putting all the more pressure on our designers. With picky clients the designers are fighting the clock and in some cases their own better judgment as the runway approaches, everyone steels themselves for a tough runway. At the beginning of the episode model JOY is out! This next assignment goes a direction not yet seen in this competition. The designers will be designing swimsuits that are functional enough to swim in the pool, yet sophisticated enough to wear to a fashion-industry party. When time is up only 5 hours later, work stops and Tim informs the designers of the surprise for this week's challenge: they're on their way to an Elle magazine party where they will have time to schmooze with Richard Johnson - the New York Post's "Page Six" columnist. The designers who impresses him most with personality and design will get mentioned in his column and win the challenge. Before the parying can begin though, the models must be convinced to wear some of the designs that they think are too revealing. You're either in, or you're out, who was out this week? At the beginning of the episode model Morgan is out!Heidi announces the next challenge: as one group, the designers will create a collection, one carrying the theme "the year 2055". One designer is to lead, taking responsibility for the overall vision, while each will designer will sketch and create an outfit of his or her own for the line. The designers are to build their collection only using items from at a vintage store. By lottery, Kevin will lead the team. The team decides that deconstruction will be the technique used to make their vintage elements seem more contemporary. A palette of tan, khaki, peach and brown will provide chromatic consistency. At the beginning of the episode model Erin is out!Instead of another assignment, Heidi gives the five finalists each brown paper packages containing the key to their next challenge, which they are not allowed to open until the next morning. Before the sun is up, the designers discover that their packages contain U.S. Postal Service uniforms for them to wear for the day. At the Hoboken, N.J. Post Office branch, Tim unveils the challenge: redesign the letter carrier's uniform, after spending the morning on a route to understand exactly what is needed to make the uniforms more hip, while being functional. On their appointed rounds, they experience the woes of polyester pants and broken-down carts. Armed with their first-hand experience and 0, the designers hit the fabric store, finding everything blue and breathable in sight. When Jay learns his model will not be arriving, he finds the only other person that could possibly fit into the design he has created for a model? Austin of course! At the beginning of the episode model Olga is out! The designers have learned to expect a twist, this week is no different. This week's challenge is to design a dress for the host of Access Hollywood, Nancy O'Dell. Nancy will help judge the runway and wear the winning design on the red carpet at the 2005 Grammy Awards. The designers get a chance to meet Nancy as she answers questions about what her preference and needs are. Another surprise is the help they get from eliminated designer Rob. With 0 to spend, the designers get busy at the fabric shop. Austin grabs a mix of soft blues and purples. Jay attempts combine his own preference with Nancy's needs and wishes. Austin commits to a loose, glamorous-but-sexy evening gown, while Wendy goes with short and sexy. Kara plays to Nancy's fondness for two-piece outfits, with a draping shirt over leather pant. All the contestants come back together for one last hurrah. It is a chance to see old friends, air old grudges and burry old axes. There are montages put together for each Austin and Tim, reflecting on some good times, funny times and stressful times. Nora and Jay show their talent for impersonations.
After months at home to prepare the final moment has come. The final three have their shot to show the world their collections. While the audience watches the models strut their stuff on the runway. Mean while backstage the air is tense and the commotion is frantic as people get ready, change and get ready again. Each of the three finalists show 12 pieces in the show, ending with a walk of the designers themselves.
