Della gets the house ready for the landlady's visit, but ends up being served with an eviction notice. The children spend a day with their long-lost father that results in civil disobedience.
Aretha is concerned about her future and decides to go to the local comprehensive school, causing much discussion about the family's home education credo. Germaine brings her new boyfriend Callum home for his first official visit.
A pregnancy scare leads Della to recruit Germaine as an intern at work, while Aretha meets a kindred spirit with sensible shoes.
Della is forced into the tertiary economy at the local car boot sale by an unexpectedly painful utility bill, while Germaine becomes cousin Cathy's unwilling assistant.
Della takes the children to Wales, for a holiday in a dead man's caravan. Germaine and Aretha both suffer heartache, which they end up taking out on each other.
