In order to earn a certificate for a month time off his sentence, Earl must end the war between two rival gangs at prison. Meanwhile, Randy is looking for ways to join Earl in prison and finally finds one: becoming a prison guard.
When Earl meets his old friend Frank in prison, flashbacks show Earl, Frank and Randy planning a heist on an Indian casino, that finally went unexpectedly wrong. Other flashbacks show Joy looking for someone to take care of her baby, Darnell entering witness protection class and Catalina illegally immigrating to the USA.
After attending a class of creative writing at the prison, Earl tries to come up with a story, but soon finds out that everyone else has a better imagination than him. Inspired by him, Randy, Joy, Darnell and Catalina take a few trips into their own fantasy worlds.
It's conjugal visiting day at the prison and since no one is visiting Earl, Frank wants Earl to explain to his girlfriend Billie why he cannot see her that day. Things don't go as planned and Billie dumps Frank because of Earl. Earl blames himself and vows to get them back together.

After a double accident, Earl and Billie are lying unconscious on the street. While Earl is in a coma, his mind creates a sitcom world, where he is married to Billie. In the real world, Randy takes matters into his own hands to save Earl.
After several happenings with his unconscious body, Earl is finally in Camden County Hospital. While his mind is still in the comatose fantasy sitcom, his friends try out different stimuli to wake him up.
After Randy realized that working on the list helps Earl get better, he continues to cross things off the list. This time he has to make up for Earl and him stealing a motorcycle, which proves harder than he thinks, because both of them were drunk while stealing the motorcycle, so he can not remember where they put it. Meanwhile, comatose Earl has to deal with his pregnant wife Billie in his fantasy world.
When Randy visits his parents to make up for their ruined vacation, he realizes that he forgot to tell them about Earl's prison sentence and the following coma, at all. A flashback takes us back to when Earl and Randy ruined their parents' vacation due to a stolen duffel bag full of weed.
When the hospital wants to get rid of Earl, Randy decides to take care of his brother by himself. But instead of working on the list for Earl, he uses Earl's help to cross things off in order to help him get better.
When Earl finally wakes up from his coma, he believes in Karma again and considers Billie his soul mate, but he doesn't know where to find her, so he asks her ex-boyfriend Frank for help.
Inspired by Earl, Billie starts a list of her own and when Earl is getting annoyed by Billie's little habits, he decides to focus on working on the list instead. He picks a task that is on both of their lists, atones for the injury of a champion grocery-bagger and discovers a unique talent of his own. But Earl soon finds out that they have different ways of interpreting Karma.
When Earl can't get along with Billie, he tries to find the reason Karma brought the two together, so he continues to work on the list. He finds out that working on the list, especially on items where he pissed off a girl, helps to change Billie's behavior to the better.
When Earl finds out that making up for all the bad things he did to women changes Billie's behaviour to the good, he picks the worst thing he ever did to women on his list. Billie wants him to choose between her and his list. When he picks the list, she steals it and starts un-doing the items he has already accomplished.
