Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May immerse themselves in nostalgia and try to prove that hot hatches from their younger days are better than today's equivalents. Jeremy grabs the keys to a Volkswagen Golf GTI, Richard takes the wheel of a Vauxhall Nova SRi and James May opts for the Ford Fiesta XR2i, and the trio set off on a road trip that includes a hill climb and a visit to a supermarket. However, their adventure concludes at an army training ground in Wales, where they and their steeds must face the heavily armed Top Gear Police Department. Downton Abbey star Hugh Bonneville blasts the Reasonably Priced Car around the test track.
The series continues with a jam-packed show featuring Italian sports cars, military manoeuvres and a trip to Belgium. Richard Hammond is on the shores of Lake Como testing the exciting new Alfa Romeo 4C, a mid-engined machine from one of the world's most beloved sports car makers. Hammond's enjoyment of the super-lightweight, 237 horsepower beauty is brought to an abrupt halt by the arrival of Jeremy Clarkson on a quad bike, demanding a race to the far end of the vast lake. Unfortunately for Hammond, Clarkson's quad bike is not entirely as it first seems. Elsewhere in the programme, Clarkson is in the genteel surroundings of Bruge and at the rather less sedate Spa Grand Prix track in order to test a thrilling new breed of hybrid hypercar: the stunning, 904 horsepower McLaren P1. Meanwhile, James May is at the vast Camp Bastion in Afghanistan looking at the incredible efforts behind the army's largest vehicle redeployment since the Second World War. Finally, actor Tom Hiddleston, star of Thor, The Avengers and War Horse, tries his hand out on the track as the Star in the Reasonably Priced Car.
The presenters show their love of small cars with a trip to Ukraine. Jeremy selects a Volkswagen Up for the journey, while Richard takes a Ford Fiesta and James deciding on a Dacia Sandero. James Blunt is this week's star in a Reasonably Price Car.
Jeremy celebrates the return of the hand-crafted car with a trip to Italy to drive the Alfa Romeo-based Touring Disco Volante. Richard is on the dunes in Abu Dhabi where he test drives the six-wheeled Mercedes called the G63 6x6. Jack Whitehall is this week's star in the Reasonably Priced Car.
In a recent column for Top Gear magazine, Jeremy described the longest crash of his life. It may or may not have happened while filming this power test. And it may or may not have been in the BMW M135i. It may have been in the ?Golf GTI. Although - on an alarmingly wet track - a front-drive VW is surely ?a safer bet than a meaty, rear-drive BMW. Either way, the skid marks ?will be there for years. (TBC).
In the course of making its annual not-quite-Christmas special, Top Gear usually goes to a country you've heard of, such as Vietnam or India. This time, however, the since-when-has-Christmas-been-in-February special is from a place few people have heard of at all: The Republic of the Union of Myanmar. You might know it better as Burma.
Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May continue their journey in three ancient and barely functioning trucks, heading toward their final challenge - building a bridge over River Kwai in Thailand. Having climbed mountains and endured a Burmese trucker stop, they must now venture into the Shan state, an area rife with civil war and normally closed to Western TV crews.
